There are many wonderful attractions to visit in Sydney. Some of the best Sydney attractions include the Harbour Bridge, the Rocks, Circular Quay, Opera House Sydney, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Art Gallery of New South Wales and Australian Museum. These places are fabulous, interesting and rich in history. Most tourists will not want to miss any of these highlights when they tour Sydney.

The Harbour Bridge is Australia’s most famous and unique construction. This bridge is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the widest steel arch bridge in the world. The width of its deck is 49m, consisting of eight traffic lanes, two railway lines, a cycleway and footway. This magnificent bridge took about nine years to build and was completed in 1932. It weighs about 60,000 tonnes and from its highest point, is about 134m above the harbour. The Harbour Bridge links the city’s northern and southern suburbs. The best time to walk the Bridge is dawn, when the water of the harbour reflects a creamy liquid gold colour as the sun shines on it.

A premier tourist attraction, the Rocks is one of Sydney’s most historic areas. In fact, this area depicts its vital role in Sydney’s development. With its richness in colonial history, it gives visitors a taste of Sydney’s past times. Currently, the place has a variety of pubs, restaurants and gift shops.

Circular Quay is previously known as Sydney Cove. It was at this place when, in January 1788, the new British colony of New South Wales was declared. Huge crowds used to gather in this place to celebrate festivals, memorable occasions, significant events, etc. For example, Circular Quay drew huge crowds when, in 1994, Sydney was awarded the year 2000 Olympic Games.

Most tourists in Sydney would not want to miss visiting the Opera House Sydney. It takes only about 5 minutes to walk from Circular Quay, strolling along the promenade. The Opera House Sydney is Australia’s most interesting, significant and unique building. In fact, there is no building on earth that looks like the Opera House Sydney. It is considered as one of the world’s busiest performing arts centre, holding an average of about 3,000 performances and events annually. The Opera House Sydney has 5 theatres – a concert hall, an opera theatre, a drama theatre, a cinema and a recording hall. Besides these theatres, it has 5 restaurants, a number of bars, 6 lounges, a library, 5 rehearsal studios and 65 dressing rooms.

Beyond the Circular Quay and Opera House Sydney is the Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens. This beautiful and charming place serves as a retreat for most city workers who often come here during lunchtime breaks or for jogging. It provides them a quiet refuge from the city’s bustling activities. The Gardens have over 4,000 trees and plants from all over the world. In the herbarium and the pyramid glasshouse, you can find a wide range of tropical and sub-tropical plants. There is a Visitors Centre, Gardens Shop and Gardens Restaurant. If you want to learn more about the plants in these Gardens, you can participate in one of the guided walks which are conducted daily starting at 10.30am from the Centre.

The Art Gallery of New South Wales displays a wide range of art pieces including Aboriginal works, modern Australian art and the works of Australia’s best colonial artists. The art gallery holds regular exhibitions. There are some food eateries and a bookshop in this art gallery.

Australia’s oldest and largest natural history museum is the Australian Museum. Some experts regard it as one of the world’s top natural history museums. Visitors to this museum will have the chance to see Australia’s finest flora and fauna. The museum has a great collection of more than 8 million specimens. Besides these displays, it also holds exhibitions on Aboriginal culture and Australian wildlife. There is a shop selling artifacts and history books.

Described above are some of the best Sydney attractions. You can see that there are many kinds of attractions in this place. You can choose to visit historical places, distinctive buildings, art gallery, museum, art centre, gardens, and so on. A tour in Sydney could encompass a combination of different activities and interests. Many tourists have found Sydney a wonderful place to visit. Why not visit Sydney today.

By: Rose Mary

About the Author:

If you’re planning a trip down under, try to visit some or all of these outstanding attractions.

FRASER ISLAND

This, the largest sand island on the planet became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992. Lush rainforests, impressive sand cliffs and memorable freshwater lakes leave a lasting impression on the thousands who visit the island each year. Apart from its long beaches of white, glistening sand, Fraser Island also draws people hoping to catch a glimpse of its famous dingo population. The island covers over four hundred acres and lies of the east coast of Australia within the jurisdiction of Queensland. Some visitors opt to take day trips, but most choose to spend a night or two on the island. One of the more unusual tourist attractions is ship that ran aground during the cyclone of 1935.

SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE

Known locally as ‘The Coat-hanger’, Sydney Harbour Bridge is instantly recognisable to many people around the world. Of the 1,400 men who constructed the bridge, 16 were killed before completion in 1932. The braver amongst you can do the ‘Bridge-climb’, an escorted walk to the top. As you ascend, the cars below become smaller and smaller. ‘The Rocks’, regarded as Sydney’s birthplace, is situated at the foot of the bridge. Today it is bustling with restaurants, shops, galleries and cafes, a far cry from the scene which would have met those arriving from Plymouth in 1788.

GREAT BARRIER REEF

Another UNESCO World Heritage site, The Great Barrier Reef is probably the most well known protected marine site in the world. It covers a staggering 86 million acres along the coast of North East Australia. At 1,429 miles long, the reef is home to 1,500 species of fish. Its area is actually larger than the combined size of Tasmania and Victoria. Apart from the natural beauty found here, there are 30 shipwrecks which are regarded as being of historical significance.

SCENIC WORLD BLUE MOUNTAINS

The Jamison Valley is home to the steepest railway journey in the world. In the valley floor, you’ll find over two kilometres of boardwalk through woodland and rain forest. You can return via the scenic cable car, which incidentally, is the steepest cable car journey in the southern hemisphere, and if that’s not enough, you can journey across the valley in the only switching, glass floored cable car in the world and enjoy views of the valley, Katoomba Falls and the famous Three Sisters rock formation.

KAKADU NATIONAL PARK

Rock paintings and archaeological sites are testament to 40,000 years of continuous habitation. The Kakadu National Park, a World Heritage site, covers almost five million acres in Australia’s Northern Territory. Today, around 300 Aboriginals live amongst the savannah woodlands and tidal wetlands.

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE

Since its opening in 1973, The Sydney Opera House has been an Australian icon. Danish architect, Jorn Utzon, created one of the twentieth century’s greatest edifices. Standing on the Bennelong Point, the building receives more than four and a half million visitors each year. Tours including backstage and front of house are available.

PORT ARTHUR

Formerly a timber station, Port Arthur became one of the most notorious penal colonies in Australia. Regarded as ‘Hell on Earth, the prison housed inmates as young as nine. The life of the prison stretched from 1833 to 1877 when it was renamed Carnarvon in an attempt to shake off its murky history. However, in 1927, it regained its title of Port Arthur. These days, the prison doors are passable in both directions, with guided tours and harbour cruises available.

ULURU-KATA TJUTA NATIONAL PARK

Uluru, formerly known as Ayres Rock, stretches over 2 miles in the otherwise anonymous scrubland of the park. At 1,142 feet high, it is the largest rock monolith in the world. Uluru is revered amongst the Aboriginal people who believe its origins date back to the creation of the Earth.

AMP TOWER CENTREPOINT

At just over 1,000 feet high, the Sydney Tower is the highest building in the city. Spectacular views across the harbour are afforded from the observation deck and the revolving restaurant.

NATIONAL GALLERY OF AUSTRALIA

Many of Australia’s finest art collections are housed in the National Gallery. A permanent collection of more than 100,000 works shares the building with international art and photography exhibitions.

By: Alan Liptrot

About the Author:

The oldest area of Sydney, The Rocks is located at the foot of Sydney Harbour Bridge and on the western shores of Sydney Cove. It is a district of restaurants, shopping stores, weekend markets, pubs, museums, and so much more. No wonder why it is one of the most visited parts of Sydney.

So how do you get to The Rocks? To get there you can take a train to Circular Quay and walk along George Street towards the Harbour Bridge. The Rocks is also an easy 10-minute walk from the heart of Sydney and the main entry point is via George Street. If you are walking from Darling Harbour then you can reach the place via Hickson Road.

The Rocks is known as the birthplace of modern-day Australia, hence, visiting it has a historical feel to it. Moreover, it has transformed into a place where you can truly enjoy, with its 19th century warehouses converted to restaurants, bars, museums, and shopping stores.

Speaking of rich history, there are lots of museums and galleries to visit in Sydney. There is The Rocks Discovery Museum which is a mixture of interactive technology and archaeological artifacts found in The Rocks. It also tells the story of The Rocks from pre-European period to the present.

Other galleries and museums include:

o Argyle Gallery – a place for all Australian art and fine craft including Aboriginal paintings, woodworks, and glassware;
o The Collection at Gannon House – which includes both indigenous and other contemporary Australian art and craft;
o Susannah Place Museum – which is a small terrace museum of four brick houses including a corner grocer’s shop; and
o The Museum of Contemporary Art – is dedicated to collecting and presenting contemporary art from across Australia and around the world. Free guided tours of the exhibitions are also held daily, with talks by artists, curators, and industry professionals.

Those tours to the museums and galleries may make you hungry, and you can treat yourself to at least one of the district’s restaurants. Some examples are:

o Altitude, a stylish 105-seat restaurant which rests high above the city skyline and offers world-class views across Sydney Harbour and beyond;
o The Canteen, an easy drop-in noodle bar featuring a long, communal table and some coveted balcony tables outside;
o Shiki Japanese Restaurant, known for exquisite, fresh cuisine, the menu of which ranges from traditional favorites to innovative delicacies; and
o Zia Pina Pizzeria, a place where you can enjoy the real traditional Italian pasta and pizza at a very affordable price.

Of course, you cannot afford to miss the fashion shops, which include:

o Rip Curl, born at Bells Beach in 1969, is an Australian company for surfers;
o Boutique Belle, which caters to the mature customer;
o Rocks Style, which specializes in quality Australian clothing, including Drizabone, R.M. Williams, and Coogi; and
o Wombat at The Rocks, which offer quality Australian clothing, ugg boots, hats, and other accessories for men, women, and children.

Other attractions in The Rocks include:

o Bridge Climb Sydney which provides the ultimate experience of Sydney, with guided climb to the top of the world-renowned Sydney Harbour Bridge;
o King George V Recreation Centre which provides city residents, workers, students and visitors with a state of the art community and recreation facility;
o Sydney Observatory which allows you to see the southern sky and views over Sydney Harbour; and
o The Argyle Orcale where gifted pyschics provide daily personal readings in Tarot, Clairvoyance, Palmistry, Astrology, Numerology, Crystal Ball Reading, and Aura Reading.

There is truly so much to do and see in The Rocks, so it is fairly reasonable to include it in your to-go list when you decide to visit Australia.

By: Jo Alelsto

About the Author:

Usually when people talk about international vacation destinations, Portugal is one country that they never think of. Little do they know what they are missing out on. With it’s beautiful landscape, culture and buildings, Portugal should be one of the must-see countries in your holiday itinerary.

Here are some of Portugal’s famous tourist attractions that are bound to pique your interest:

o Lagos: This town is a combination of magnificent cliffs and sandy white beaches. You can see many films and enjoy the beer that is sold in large amounts here. This Algarve town is the correct place for party lovers but you should not miss a chance to explore its beaches which can be done by renting a bike, moped or a horse.

o Evora: This walled town is situated amidst vineyards, flowers and olive trees. The cathedral and the Roman temple are the main attractions here. But do not miss the ossuary chapel, which is made from thousands of human bones and skulls. Sound morbid but it is also fascinating.

o The Rossio, Lisbon: Although the actual name of the Plaza is Praca D. Pedro IV, all the locals call it the Rossio. It is the heart of Lisbon and people are always found here doing something or the other. The plaza has recently had a facelift making it even more beautiful and presentable than before.

o St George’s Castle, Lisbon: The castle was used to defeat the invading Moor armies. It offers a fantastic view of Santuario do Cristo Rei, which is a 34-meter replica of the Christ the Redeemer statue located in Rio de Janeiro. The castle cathedral was destroyed in an earthquake in 1755 and today, there are just the ruins to see.

o Madeira: Visit the beautiful volcanic island of Madeira and explore the mountains and the forests. There are some excellent trails that take you through lush green forest where you can see hordes of wild flowers blooming to full glory.

o Institute of Port Wine, Lisbon: A visit to Portugal is incomplete without tasting some delicious port wine. Visit the institute to take the local port wine which is usually serve with Serra, a type of cheese placed on crackers.

o Dining: Fado is the traditional music of Portugal and there are many Fado-themed restaurants around Lisbon and other major cities. You can eat traditional Portuguese food while being entertained by Fado guitar players and singers.

o Alfama Market, Lisbon: If you are looking for bargains, then this is the place to go to. Originally the market was named Diera da Ladra (Thief’s Market) and it has been around for hundreds of years. The most sought after items here are hand painted pottery and lace, but you can also find exquisite jewelry, books, art and secondhand sailing gear. The market is open from Saturdays through Tuedays from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m.

By: Pauline Go

About the Author:

Sydney, Australia is one of the world’s best travel destinations. It is home to some of the finest restaurants, wineries, and beaches. A trip to Sydney would not be complete without seeing the fabulous Sydney Harbor showcasing the famous Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Sydney is known for having the friendliest people, so you’ll feel right at home. Perhaps that is why Sydney has been voted the best city in the world for visitors six consecutive years.

Hunter Valley Wineries

Australia’s oldest, most visited wine region is an easy two-hour drive from Sydney. There are about 120 wineries to visit. Part of the fun is discovering an excellent wine that you can’t buy just anywhere. There’s nothing like tasting a wine on the site where the wine was made and with the person who made it.

The Hunter Valley is also well known for its gourmet restaurants, all of which make good use of the local produce. Hunter Valley beef, duck, cheeses, olives, stone fruits and honey are all found in the area. There are also lots of things to do, from touring wine cellars to relaxing in luxurious day spas.

Sydney Harbor

Sydney sits on one of the most beautiful harbors in the world. The harbor provides the perfect backdrop for sailing, swimming, fishing, jetboating, dining, and harbor tours by ferry or seaplane. Climbing the Harbor Bridge is also a favorite for tourists, which takes you from the base to the summit of the famous bridge’s arch.

If you’re looking for a more leisurely tour of Sydney, a Harbor cruise is the perfect scenic adventure. Short Harbor cruises will allow you to do some sightseeing for an hour or so. The sunset dinner cruises offer a romantic dinner for two while listening to the world’s most popular arias from the Opera House.

Regardless of how you choose to see the sights, Sydney Harbor offers exciting adventures, relaxing tours, and one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Opera House

The Opera House nestled in Sydney Harbor is an architectural wonder! You can take a walking tour of the famous theater with a knowledgeable guide, or attend one of the many performances held at Sydney’s Opera House. They even offer a backstage tour of the Opera House so you can stand on stage and meet the performers, stars, and staff.

Sydney Accommodations

When staying in Sydney, you’ll find fantastic accommodations. Two of my favorites are the North Sydney Harbourview Hotel and Four Points by Sheraton Darling Harbour.

The Harbourview Hotel has spectacular views of the Sydney Harbor Bridge and the city’s skyline. Known for its uncompromising service, the Harbourview is close to tourist attractions like the Taronga Zoo and the Bridge Climb.

The Sheraton’s Four Points overlooks the Darling Harbour and is minutes from all the best tourist attractions in Sydney. You’ll be right in the thick of the entertainment and dining center of Sydney. Don’t forget to stop in the hotel’s restaurant for an elegant seafood buffet. You won’t want to miss it.

Sydney Beaches

With over 240 days of sun and clear blue skies, you cannot leave Sydney without visiting one of the sprawling sandy beaches. The coast line of New South Wales has miles of unspoiled beaches perfect for swimming, surfing, coastal walks and scenic drives. Some of the most popular Sydney beaches include Byron Bay, Coffs Coast, Bondi, Ballina, Port Macquarie and Crescent Head.

No matter which activities interest you, there will be endless fun and adventurous things to see in Sydney Australia. If you’re planning on visiting Sydney, make sure to plan enough time to see all the culture and history this city has to offer.

By: Eric Cho

About the Author:

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest organic structure, making it one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Almost one fifth of the world’s coral reefs could be found here. Over 400 varieties of corals are seen in the Great Barrier Reef. It also houses an estimate of 1,500 different kinds of fish and almost 4,000 types of mollusks. Tourists would be amazed to take a glimpse of these wonderful creations. Other activities guests could do are to dive, take a cruise, or even enjoy a helicopter flight.

Another popular tourist destination is the world-famous Sydney Opera House. A Danish architect named Jorn Utzon built it in 1957. An amazing feature of this structure is its roof, which weighs over 161,000 tons. Sydney Opera House showcases a variety of productions all throughout the year. It is considered as one of the most prominent centers for the performing arts. There are actually a thousand rooms, which are used for performances inside this spectacular building.

The Blue Mountains is definitely a place to see. These stunning formations of sandstone rocks would leave the tourists in awe. This is a perfect tourist attraction for nature lovers who would enjoy simple sightseeing and strolling along its lush gardens. Visitors who love adventures would take pleasure in horse riding, mountain biking, hiking, and other extreme activities the Blue Mountains offers.

Also dubbed as Ayers Rock, the famous Uluru is another sandstone rock formation in Australia. It also boasts an array of serene springs, amazing caves, and ancient paintings of the Aboriginal people. It is 1,142 feet high. Visitors could take a stroll together with a native and be able to see different flora and fauna on the land. Uluru is also renowned for its color change in various parts of the day. The sunset is the most awaited of tourists for its color remarkably becomes red. When guests come on a rainy day, they will see that Uluru’s color changes to grayish-silver with black moss covering some parts of the rocks.

Another one adding to the list of spectacular rock formations in Australia is the Kata Tjuta, which is also known as Mount Olga or the Olgas. This natural wonder is 25 kilometers from Uluru. Having 36 domes in over 3,500 hectares, Kata Tjuta is truly a magnificent view for people to see. There are several special viewing areas for visitors to stop over and catch a glimpse of this awesome structure, particularly during sunrise and sunset. Both Uluru and Kata Tjuta are considered sacred places for the natives. Be advised that taking pictures along the premises of these rock formations are restricted due to the locals’ beliefs and traditions.

By: Patrick Garde

About the Author:
