Insurance is extremely common in today’s world – almost everyone will have insurance of some sort; most will have multiple policies protecting themselves and their assets against various events. One type that tends to be misunderstood and underutilized is vision insurance, which offers a range of benefits relating to one’s eyesight, including cover for visits to eye specialists and related costs.

The following will highlight what vision insurance is, and provide general information on why having this type of coverage can be advantageous.

A definition

Vision insurance is a specialist type of cover, and is designed to provide for expenses relating to eye care and health. Similar to health insurance, a vision policy will cover office visits and services rendered by eye doctors, both general eye health practitioners and specialist optometrists (up to a certain level based on you’re the provider and plan selected). As with other policies, the insured will pay a monthly or annual premium in addition to a set deductible or excess amount every time a claim for reimbursement of specific eye-related services and costs is made.

Typical benefits

Whether you wear glasses, contacts or you simply are interested in constant checkups to ensure the best possible vision and eye health, a policy can provide significant value. In fact, it is common to hear that a vision insurance policy more than pays for itself on an annual basis. As policies generally have a reasonable premium amount attached to them, many find that having coverage is more cost-effective than not, as eye health services and glasses/contacts can be expensive to say the least. Vision insurance may reduce the money spent on these services, even when you factor in the annual premium and deductibles.

A common misconception is vision insurance only covers an individual’s annual eye exam coverage and any unexpected eye related conditions. However, depending on the provider and policy selected, there may be many other inclusions and benefits. Although each policy will be different, most include coverage for a wide array of eye doctors such as optometrists, ophthalmologists and others in the vision arena. Policies may also cover a variety of eye-related needs such as eye exams, consultation for eye problems and the need for glasses and/or contact lenses. By having a policy in place, you are in effect making sure that you and your family members are covered whenever you need to be seen by an eye doctor for one reason or another.

Also, many may think that their health cover plan will include visits to an optometrist, but in fact many do not. Some health plans will cover an exam for a medical problem or an annual eye exam but this is as far as it goes with regard to coverage for eye issues, which can end up being very expensive. With a vision insurance policy, the insured can rest easy knowing that their eye health needs are covered no matter what the vision issue may be. Having appropriate insurance will mean that you are never caught off guard with regard to paying high medical bills on vision related office visits and treatments. There is clear value in being covered with regard to medical issues of the eye and general eye health.

By: David J Wright

About the Author:

Most individuals are relatively familiar with the basic types of insurance coverage such as auto, homeowners, health and life insurance. Even those who do not have an active policy are likely to have a basic understanding of how they work given the prevalence of insurance in today’s society. One of the lesser known types of coverage is umbrella insurance, and despite being lesser known it can be extremely helpful in a wide range of circumstances. The following will describe what umbrella protection is and highlight the basic protections it offers. Please note that this article is not intended to replace professional advice.

Simply put, umbrella insurance is fills in the gaps where auto and/or homeowners insurance leaves a shortfall. It is a way for insured individuals to receive extra protection and cover aspects of auto insurance policies and homeowners insurance policies not already covered. As is to be expected, those who obtain an umbrella insurance policy will have to pay an annual premium on top of their other insurance coverage policies, but the annual premium is often worth the extra peace of mind which an umbrella insurance policy provides to insured persons.

In order to gain a better understanding behind the concept of an umbrella insurance policy, we can look at examples of what a policy will cover in the real world. One example pertaining to your auto coverage – if you get into a car accident and the court rules in favor of the other party, you will usually have to pay some sort of monetary amount to settle the matter. As your auto policy may only cover part of the damages, you can use your umbrella insurance policy to cover the remainder of the costs. This extra protection can be extremely useful in a matter such as this one.

Another example in relation to homeowner insurance – suppose an incident occurs on your property and your homeowners policy does not cover it. Depending on the circumstances, your umbrella insurance policy may. This gap filling coverage is extremely handy and is one of the main reasons why more and more individuals are obtaining an umbrella policy in addition to their auto coverage and homeowners coverage.

Before obtaining an umbrella insurance policy, it is important to evaluate whether doing so is the right move for you to make, and if necessary seek professional advice. Initially it is a good idea to speak to your current provider(s) to determine whether there is a shortfall. In the event that you do identify a shortfall, call around to insurance agents to see which one offers the best deal. If the annual premium is simply too high to fit within your budget, then you may choose to pass on an umbrella insurance policy for the time being. However, if the premium is reasonable and you can fit it into your budget, then you may decide to move on to the next step and considering your current policies to see what liability limits exist on them.

Reviewing your current auto insurance policy and homeowners insurance policy liability limits is important when considering if you should obtain an umbrella insurance policy. If your current policies have high liability limits on them and reasonable deductibles, then acquiring an umbrella policy may not be necessary, at least not as much so as for those who have less favorable liability limits. On the other hand, if your liability limits are on the lower side, you may find that an extra cover in the form of umbrella protection is a wise move to make.

By: David J Wright

About the Author:

Multi trip travel insurance refers to one insurance policy (taken out by an individual or a company for its staff) which covers multiple trips, overseas or domestically within a given period. By taking out multi trip insurance directly online the insured saves not only premium costs but also time normally spent organizing many single trip policies.

Annual multi trip insurance covers you for unlimited trips over a 12 month period with the only proviso being that each trip can be no longer than 90 days. The premiums for a multi trip annual policy are less than if you took out a single trip policy each time you traveled. It is similar to a “bulk buy” in that the insurance company obviously earns a bigger premium for greater cover but because there is less time involvement for the insurer they can average down the cost per trip for the client. Basic multi trip annual insurance will include cover for emergency hospital and medical treatment as well as some other minor risks (stolen documents, loss of income etc) whereas if you take out comprehensive cover then you will be covered for an expanded range of risks which could include death and permanent disability, emergency companion cover, family emergency and additional accommodation cover.

Cheap or basic cover for annual multi trip travel insurance is obviously less costly but it is important for a company to cover risk adequately because without doing so, the company could suffer significant financial loss if a staff member is hospitalized for a lengthy period of time. By purchasing either basic or comprehensive business insurance online you will find the premiums even cheaper because the insurance company is selling directly to you rather than through an agent. Commission that would otherwise be paid to the agent is instead applied (at least to some extent) to reducing the premiums on your business travel multi trip insurance policy. There are some well established online insurance companies that can provide quality multi-trip cover at up to 50% less than the cost for the same cover through a travel agency or other insurance companies generating their business through a commission based distribution channel.

Some insurance companies will not insure the elderly or those with pre existing medical conditions. There are however online travel policy companies who do not have any age limits on their policies and will offer multi trip travel policy to those with pre existing medical conditions. Any traveler with pre existing medical conditions will obviously need to complete an online pre-existing medical condition process and should expect to pay a higher premium because of the increased risk to the travel insurance company. Similarly if you are an elderly traveler your premiums will be higher but insignificant when compared to the very high costs of hospitalization or medical treatment charged in many countries around the world.

A further way to save on premiums is to nominate the destination areas where you or your company’s employees will be traveling. While many multi trip insurance policies have a blanket world wide cover you can arrange a tailored policy through a limited number of travel insurers. If you have staff traveling in the Asia and Pacific region (where medical and hospital costs are reasonable) why pay higher premiums to cover travel in the USA where hospitalization costs are extremely high? Go direct online for your multi-trip travel insurance, obtain destination based cover and save.

By: Peter Joness

About the Author:

With so many travel insurance providers available to the savvy consumer, it is sometimes difficult to know who to trust and what questions to ask. However, doing your research is an important step in making sure that not only are you working with a reputable organization, but that the travel insurance coverage you are getting is suited to your specific needs. The following are a few key questions to ask your insurance provider before setting out on your travels:

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

If you have a pre-existing medical condition or if there is pre-existing political, ecological, or social strife in the area you are visiting, your travel insurance may not cover them.

Are sports/adventure injuries covered?

If you are going to be participating in high-risk activities (for example, mountain climbing or playing sports), your policy might not cover any injuries sustained during their involvement. However, for an additional loading many providers do offer coverage for these activities.

Are acts of terrorism or political turmoil covered?

If an act of terrorism cuts your trip short or stops it from occurring, it is important to be covered for these particular contingencies.

What happens if one of the businesses I’m booked with goes out of business?

If you are going on a cruise and pay for it in advance, there is always the possibility of the cruise line, airline or hotel going bankrupt before your trip even starts. Some insurers will may also not honor a claim in the travel agency (or distributor if you booked your travel insurance online) you booked your policy through goes bankrupt.

What is the cost?

Most of the time, travel insurance costs anywhere from 3 percent to 8 percent of the total trip cost. Things like your age, the length of the trip, your destination, and the time of travel can have a influence on the total price. Group rates or annual cover can bring that price down.

How long will I have to wait to get my baggage back?

Most travel insurance policies cover baggage misplacement or loss. However, it is important to make sure that any attempts to retrieve your luggage will be timely.

How long will I have to wait for reimbursement in the event of a cancellation?

It’s a good idea to know the timelines for refunds and other money matters.

What is the limit on health care coverage?

Like regular medical insurance, travel insurance typically has a maximum amount of health care coverage. Know the financial limits of your policy. You might also want to ask about up-front costs or deductibles.

In the event of an emergency, is assistance provided 24 hours?

Needing assistance (for a medical emergency, a cancellation, or even a baggage issue) in the middle of the day in one country might mean needing coverage in the middle of the night in the place you bought your coverage.

How do I go about getting care if there is a medical emergency?

Does your have resources available to direct you to the best hospitals and healthcare facilities in your destination? How easy are those resources to access?

Do my kids need separate travel insurance policies?

Your children may or may not be covered by your travel insurance. Find the best way to get your whole family covered.

Please note that this list is not comprehensive. These questions are best used for opening dialogues with your travel insurance provider to understand the details of your particular policy. Always be sure to read the fine print and be wary of any company that can’t or won’t answer your questions.

By: David J Wright

About the Author:

Whenever you encounter an accident, if you have a health insurance then they will take care of your hospital bills. That is the general purpose of insurance. Mainly, insurances are a type of risk management principally comes into use to avoid against the dangers/risk of a client. However, the Australia Insurance market is somewhat well-designed and refined because they are just divided into 3 parts; these are life insurance, health insurance, and general insurance.

Life insurance is a type of insurance wherein it offers financial benefit to the assigned beneficiary; whether it is a family member, a loved one, or anyone picked by the client. An example of a life insurance found in Australia is AMP Limited. Started as a mutual company in 1849, it is now one of the foremost wealth organization industries in Australia. They are serving at least 3.4 million clients and a number of 820,000 shareholders. As of June 2009, they have accumulated an A$104 billion in assets. ING or the International Netherlands Group in Australia has many good services and packages that suit the requirements of different people. They have the inexpensive EasyProtect life insurance by which it covers deaths like illness or injury related. This can be sued to pay off the debt you’ve left behind and provide your family’s cost expenses.

A common insurance in almost all over the world including Australia is health insurance. They are the ones who answer the bills when it comes into medical care such as dental, hospital, and other types of medical categories. They often come with an employment deal. Medibank Private is a leading health insurance company, by which they cover up to thirty-three percent of health insurance market. They offer a range of health cover which suit the need and budget range of a client; the hospital cover which makes you choose your preferred hospital and doctor and how soon you would want to be treated, the extra cover which covers you dental treatments, optical care, and physiotherapy. But there is also a package cover that includes both hospital and extra cover into one package.

Meanwhile, General insurances are those other insurances including the public liability, travel, auto, and businesses. In other countries, these insurances are not categorized into general insurance, they would have different classes. Where as in Australia, they are simplified and classified into the General Insurance category. It is also divided into two classes: liability insurance which is mainly consisted of motor insurance, business insurance, worker’s compensation, and etc. The other Property insurance which consists of house/home contents, traveling, and motor vehicles. An example of a General Australian Insurance provider is the Allianz Australia. They are 4th largest general insurers in the continent; they hold 2 million policyholders and have an investment asset of roughly 4.6 billion dollars.

If you are in the market for domestic travel insurance then check out the reputable online insurance companies and buy direct because you will make big savings in your premium.

You may be planning on taking a single trip or be someone who travels regularly within Australia or are a company that employs a number of staff who need to travel interstate on a regular basis. Depending on whether it is single insurance, multi trip insurance, or domestic annual trip insurance you will pay a different premium for a different service. Usually the premium is quite low for domestic travel policy as the amount of monetary outlay the insurance company will likely need to release in the event of hospitalization or illness is considerable less that what would be required when traveling overseas, particularly in countries such as the USA where medical costs are extremely high.

The use of discounted domestic travel insurance is a phenomenon that has taken place now that air flights are becoming cheaper and cheaper, especially for domestic flights, and more people are traveling. Greater volume of travelers and the resulting higher demand for domestic travel policy has reduced the overall premium costs to budget and other travelers.

In the past, when traveling domestically, some people considered the cost of illness or accident to be low risk (compared to the premium payable) and opt not to take out a domestic insurance policy. Considering the relatively low cost of domestic travel insurance offered online it is now recommended that anyone traveling take out a policy to cover of illness, accident, loss of income and the like. It is a simple process to get online and compare the domestic travel policy options available to you. You can elect to take out basic cover or a more comprehensive policy which will insure you against not just medical and hospital costs but also a wide range of other activities.

You can tailor the policy to suit your needs – are you planning on hiking through Kakadu National Park? Are you going for surfing lessons at Bondi or are you just going to Melbourne Crown Casino for the long weekend? No matter the domestic destination there is a cheap domestic travel insurance policy for you. Often your plans for your holiday can change so it is also important to shop around for a deal that might take into account your spontaneous holiday desires such as rock-climbing out of town as a break from gambling at the Melbourne Casino. A comprehensive package is usually the best bet for those who know what activities they plan to get involved in and also those activities they may spontaneously decide to do once at the destination.

Online domestic insurance is readily available for families and singles and with some insurance companies the elderly or those with pre-existing medical conditions can also take out cover albeit that the premium you pay may be higher, because of the increased risk of a claim against the insurance company.

There are many cheap insurance policies out there. It is critical that you not only compare cheap insurance but also compare the type of coverage you get for the price. A basic policy with minimum cover will obviously be less than a comprehensive policy that covers many more activities. One last note worth mentioning is the existence of add on insurance. This type of insurance allows you to call your travel insurance company before you take on an extra activity, like skiing, so that you get cover before you hit the slopes.

By: Peter Joness

About the Author:

There are countless reasons why looking into travel insurance is worth your time and money. Whether you will be traveling over long distances and long periods of time or taking a quick jaunt across the country, it’s always a good idea to make sure that you are protected against some of the biggest pitfalls of travel.

The Basics

While saving money is on everyone’s mind these days, skimping out by choosing the bare minimum insurance for travel isn’t always the smartest place to tighten the proverbial belt. While most travel insurance policies cover basic medical expenses, emergency assistance, accidental death or dismemberment coverage, lost luggage, and/or cancellation fees, additional contingencies may require additional coverage or disclosure.

For example, if you are traveling on business, you may be carrying quite a bit of expensive equipment in the form of laptop computers, communications technology, and personal effects. Getting coverage for the theft of these items – in a dollar amount that will ensure you don’t have additional out-of-pocket expenses should a theft occur – may be something you need to add to a traditional insurance policy.

Additional features

If you’re traveling to a high-risk area (such as a war zone or a country noted for terrorist activity), your basic insurance for travel options might not include coverage for terrorist activity, injury sustained due to war, or evacuation from a dangerous location. It’s always a good idea to determine what kinds of supplemental policies are available if you intend to travel to a high-risk location, especially since that extra insurance could potentially come in handy in the event of an emergency.

Supplemental travel insurance for extreme sports coverage is also a good idea for those who like to undergo a little adventure during their travels. Traditionally, activities like mountain biking, water sports, skiing, and sky diving are not covered by insurance – and with good reason. These activities are not part of the average travel itinerary, and they result in higher rates of injury. In order to keep travel insurance costs to individuals who don’t thrive off risks at a reasonable rate, those who do wish to push their limits are generally required to pay a little extra for the privilege.

Specialty coverage

Long-term, student, and group insurance options are also available through most online travel insurance providers. These specialty options are designed for specific types of travelers. For example, individuals who intend to travel for longer periods (or unspecified) amounts of time, as well as those who are going to live abroad to perform missionary or other work, can benefit from a long-term policy that will cover them for the duration of their stay.

Student and group travel insurance policies are also designed with a specific user base in mind. Students traveling abroad for educational reasons can usually find specially-priced policies that cover health care, emergency assistance, and trip cancellation. Tour groups – especially those that travel on cruises – can find great rates when everyone signs up for a group insurance policy.

Choose Wisely

No matter what the reasons behind your travels are, there is an insurance policy designed with you in mind. Always disclose all your intended activities to your insurance provider to make sure that you are fully covered. Insurance for travel is a great way to keep yourself – and your travel investment – safe, as long as you get the right policy.

By: David J Wright

About the Author:

There are many different types of traveller. There are business men and women who are flying from one city to another for brief meetings, then there are families taking a two week holiday to the sun with young children, then there are students or gap year travellers who will be backpacking around exotic locations on extremely low budgets. There are really about as many different types of traveller as there are different types of person.

There are many different approaches you can take to booking your travel arrangements. Your main priority may be convenience, for example if you have a meeting near the airport you will need airport accommodation and little else, however, if you are travelling for pleasure, you are likely to have far less restrictions and will be willing to consider all types of arrangements. You can have these arranged for you by a travel agent or you could do it for yourself online. Or alternatively, you may wish to simply travel to a city or country with absolutely no plans and just see what happens when you get there.

On of the things you should always travel with is proper health and travel insurance. Obviously your requirements will again vary depending on what kind of travel you are undertaking. If you are travelling for business, full travel insurance that will provide you with alternative flights if yours is cancelled or delayed will be important. For most holiday travellers, this may not be quite as important. If you are travelling with children you may wish to consider it, but otherwise you may be quite flexible and tolerant if delays do occur. But you may be more worried about your luggage and belongings and wish to have good coverage for loss or damage to your property. All these options are available today with the various travel insurance companies that are operating in the market.

Generally speaking, you will always need health insurance when you travel. You cannot afford to take the risk that an accident or serious injury occurs and you do not have proper coverage. There are many parts of the word where free national health insurance is not provided and if you do require medical treatment, it will only be provided if you can pay for it. Particularly if you are travelling with children, you should always arrange adequate travel insurance with medical coverage. This is simply a risk that you do not want to be bearing yourself especially when the cost of travel insurance is so affordable.

By: Joseph Kenny

About the Author:

Purchasing the correct type of travel insurance can be quite a puzzling task even at the best of times, especially for people who are traveling abroad for the first time. It is very easy for misunderstandings to occur. A case in point is the confusion that surrounds annual multi trip travel insurance.

There is a growing number of Insurers offering multi trip insurance but they don’t necessarily make the strict policy conditions clear to the buyer. For example, you would normally have to be based in Australia and make trips of up to a specific number of days (often 31 days) to take advantage of these policies.

However, there are many travelers, especially in the younger age bracket, looking for cheap backpackers’ insurance. They see a cheap travel insurance quote for an annual insurance policy and buy it without reading the small print carefully, thinking it will be exactly what they need. If these travelers are going to be overseas for a year, they are often attracted by the word “annual travel insurance” as well as “multi-trip” as they will be making a number of different trips throughout the year. But, the annual multi-trip policy is not suitable as they are designed and priced to only cover trips of up to 31 days (depending on the Insurer) from and within Australia.

An annual multi trip travel insurance policy can save the traveler quite a bit of money in the long run. Trip cancellation, baggage loss, personal liability plus other miscellaneous coverage can all be taken care of by this type of insurance. This sounds like a good thing, and indeed it is if your trip does not take you out of Australia for more than a limited period. However, most backpackers who intend to leave the country on their trip merely see that this policy offers no limit on the number of trips they can take per year, and blithely purchase it. It is only when they need to make use of the policy and are in perhaps Greece that they discover that their insurance will not take care of their medical needs. This is not a good feeling!

Backpackers need to search out a policy that has been specifically created with their kind of travel in mind. They need the reassurance of a 24/7 telephone helpline for any overseas medical needs that may develop, coverage for a wide range of sports or adventure activities that they may participate in during their trip, and the peace of mind that comes with the knowledge that they will have coverage on their non-manual job if they are taking a working holiday. Cover for terrorism will also help the traveler to sleep well at night!

Anyone who has yet to purchase an annual multi trip travel insurance policy would be wise to read the policy carefully before buying, and then take advantage of the company’s money back guarantee which most will offer you during the first 7 to 14 days of cover.

The last thing you want when you are taken ill and laying in hospital is a dispute about whether or not you bought the right policy. If you’re in any doubt about exactly what your annual multi trip insurance will cover, contact your travel insurance broker for clarification.

By: Josh Harrison

About the Author:
