Think of Australian holidays and images of beaches, islands, the outback and possibly a few jumping kangaroos come to mind. Think of Australian people and an image of a weather beaten bloke in a cowboy hat is probably the first caricature to spring up, followed by tanned lasses clad in bikinis sunning themselves next to the seaside. Not many people would see an Australian holiday as a chance to expand on their knowledge and compound their intelligence- theres just way too much fun to have! But the idea that there is nothing to be learnt on an Australian holiday is a horrendous misnomer, one that is about to be corrected by this write up of five Australian destinations that are guaranteed to make you smarter:

Melbourne

Melbourne is the king of cultural Australia, the centre of the arts and crafts movement in the country. With unlimited creative spaces and a myriad of avenues for expression, this is a city of museums, galleries and shows. A favoured cultural destination is the Melbourne Museum, enjoyed by over 700 000 visitors per year. Port Arthur

In the early nineteenth century it was home to the most hardened of British criminals, and its unsavoury past has become the building block to its tourist development. The impressive architecture and charming gardens of the Port Arthur historic site are a major tourist attraction, and stories of the past seem to seep out of the walls of each unique building. Guided tours can be taken of the site, and a boat goes out regularly to the little island offshore known as ‘Isle of the Dead’, where hundreds of convicts are buried.

The Hunter Valley

The Hunter valley is one of Australias most established wine producing regions, with over 4500 acres under vine and over 60 wineries and 80 grapegrowers in the region. There is a lot to be learnt in a holiday to a wine producing area- about the economics of the industry, about the growing of grapes and the production of wine, and about your own personal preferences of wine. There is a rich history of culture in the region which is represented by the numerous museums and galleries, which pay homage to the history of the region in terms of both its mining past and its wine growing present.

Fremantle

A vibrant and eclectic port city located just to the south of the Western Australian capital Perth, Fremantle has long been a stronghold for creativity and the arts. Freo is home to an array of heritage buildings and the city is characterised by Georgian and Victorian architecture. It also supports a large student population that attend the local campus, and help fuel the creative flames of Freo. Places worthy of a visit are the WA Maritime Museum located on Victoria Quay, and the Fremantle Prison, once one of the most notorious prisons in the British Empire. Expect plenty of live music on your visit to Freo, as busking is an encouraged art form that is immensely popular here.

Brisbane

Often overlooked as a sleepy oversized country town, Brisbane is actually a world class city with a rich heritage and established cultures. It supports a number of universities, and in the Southbank and Cultural Centre area there are theatres, galleries and museums. The Queensland Museum is especially impressive, as is the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Fortitude Valley, close to the city centre, is an outlet for very contemporary creativity, so expect a thriving live music scene and a laid back cafe culture.

Australia’s Top Ten Attractions

If you’re planning a trip down under, try to visit some or all of these outstanding attractions.

FRASER ISLAND

This, the largest sand island on the planet became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992. Lush rainforests, impressive sand cliffs and memorable freshwater lakes leave a lasting impression on the thousands who visit the island each year. Apart from its long beaches of white, glistening sand, Fraser Island also draws people hoping to catch a glimpse of its famous dingo population. The island covers over four hundred acres and lies of the east coast of Australia within the jurisdiction of Queensland. Some visitors opt to take day trips, but most choose to spend a night or two on the island. One of the more unusual tourist attractions is ship that ran aground during the cyclone of 1935.

SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE

Known locally as ‘The Coat-hanger’, Sydney Harbour Bridge is instantly recognisable to many people around the world. Of the 1,400 men who constructed the bridge, 16 were killed before completion in 1932. The braver amongst you can do the ‘Bridge-climb’, an escorted walk to the top. As you ascend, the cars below become smaller and smaller. ‘The Rocks’, regarded as Sydney’s birthplace, is situated at the foot of the bridge. Today it is bustling with restaurants, shops, galleries and cafes, a far cry from the scene which would have met those arriving from Plymouth in 1788.

GREAT BARRIER REEF

Another UNESCO World Heritage site, The Great Barrier Reef is probably the most well known protected marine site in the world. It covers a staggering 86 million acres along the coast of North East Australia. At 1,429 miles long, the reef is home to 1,500 species of fish. Its area is actually larger than the combined size of Tasmania and Victoria. Apart from the natural beauty found here, there are 30 shipwrecks which are regarded as being of historical significance.

SCENIC WORLD BLUE MOUNTAINS

The Jamison Valley is home to the steepest railway journey in the world. In the valley floor, you’ll find over two kilometres of boardwalk through woodland and rain forest. You can return via the scenic cable car, which incidentally, is the steepest cable car journey in the southern hemisphere, and if that’s not enough, you can journey across the valley in the only switching, glass floored cable car in the world and enjoy views of the valley, Katoomba Falls and the famous Three Sisters rock formation.

KAKADU NATIONAL PARK

Rock paintings and archaeological sites are testament to 40,000 years of continuous habitation. The Kakadu National Park, a World Heritage site, covers almost five million acres in Australia’s Northern Territory. Today, around 300 Aboriginals live amongst the savannah woodlands and tidal wetlands.

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE

Since its opening in 1973, The Sydney Opera House has been an Australian icon. Danish architect, Jorn Utzon, created one of the twentieth century’s greatest edifices. Standing on the Bennelong Point, the building receives more than four and a half million visitors each year. Tours including backstage and front of house are available.

PORT ARTHUR

Formerly a timber station, Port Arthur became one of the most notorious penal colonies in Australia. Regarded as ‘Hell on Earth, the prison housed inmates as young as nine. The life of the prison stretched from 1833 to 1877 when it was renamed Carnarvon in an attempt to shake off its murky history. However, in 1927, it regained its title of Port Arthur. These days, the prison doors are passable in both directions, with guided tours and harbour cruises available.

ULURU-KATA TJUTA NATIONAL PARK

Uluru, formerly known as Ayres Rock, stretches over 2 miles in the otherwise anonymous scrubland of the park. At 1,142 feet high, it is the largest rock monolith in the world. Uluru is revered amongst the Aboriginal people who believe its origins date back to the creation of the Earth.

AMP TOWER CENTREPOINT

At just over 1,000 feet high, the Sydney Tower is the highest building in the city. Spectacular views across the harbour are afforded from the observation deck and the revolving restaurant.

NATIONAL GALLERY OF AUSTRALIA

Many of Australia’s finest art collections are housed in the National Gallery. A permanent collection of more than 100,000 works shares the building with international art and photography exhibitions.

Melbourne Coffee Tour

Melbourne is famous for it’s cafés. Everyone likes to have good coffee like Tassimo Coffee at home or at the office but when comes to socialize a coffee shop is the perfect place. And perfect cafés are not in short supply in Melbourne. You don’t need to go to far and you will find plaint of good ones.

Knowing that Tourism Victoria created a self-guided tour through the city’s famous coffee shops. Starting with a morning coffee, then lunch, afternoon and finishing with evening, they have selected four coffee shops.

Starting the day at the Caffe e Cucina on 581 Chapel Street, South Yarra with a morning coffee and breakfast. Try to get the seats at the balcony because they have a very nice view.

For lunch the Richmond Hill Café and Larder where they have an award winning coffee and also delicious dishes. The café is on 48-50 Bridge Road, Richmond and this is also where you can find Australia No. 1 cheese expert, Will Studd.

Middle afternoon, the Laurent Patisserie where you can find good coffee as well as wonderful cakes. Located on 306 Little Collins Street, Melbourne, Laurent is decorated in an European style with a “peu” of Paris.

To finish your day tour, the evening suggestion is the Tiamo and Tiamo 2 on 303 and 305 Lygon Street, Carlton, with excellent food as well as coffee this place is in the heart of Melbourne’s Little Italy and a stroll to the city centre a perfect excuse if you feel like some nightlife entertainment.

So if you plan to move to a city and you plan to bring your dog with you, it is best to find a city that is animal-friendly. You will know that a city is animal friendly if it has a lot of parks that allow dogs, pet grooming salons, veterinary services, and pet shops available.

When it comes to hotels, there are some that allow pets to room in with their masters. In most cases however, your pet has to be really small as hotels usually have certain weight requirements when it comes to the pets that they allow inside their establishment. In addition, you have to pay a pet deposit fee if you plan to let your dog sleep in the hotel.

Should you decide to check-in to a hotel that does not allow pets, never try to hide your dog under a blanket. Most hotels now have CCTV cameras so they can monitor your every move.

It is also important to note that most animal-friendly hotels aren’t the cleanest hotels around. You should be prepared for the disadvantages that can come from a hotel that accepts pets.

Besides the accommodation problem, you can also face the transportation problem. If you don’t own a personal vehicle, you won’t be able to travel pretty much anywhere using public transportation, such as buses, subways or trains.

Of course owners who have small pets are given the green light, but those who have bigger pets will have some serious transportation issues. All in all, it’s not an easy task to travel along with your fuzzy friends.
